“Anatomy of a Fall” lines up international awards and nominations

We can’t stop Anatomy of a Fall , the French film which won all the votes, critics and audiences, and whose success snowballed internationally, in the wake of the Palme d’Or won in May 2023 , at the end of the 76th Cannes Film Festival. Saturday December 9, in Berlin, the film was a real hit at the 36th European Film Awards ceremony, from which it walked away with six statuettes – best film, best direction, best screenplay and best actress for its headliner Sandra Hüller .

He left the competition far behind, including some heavyweights like The Zone of Interest by the British Jonathan Glazer, Moi, Capitaine by the Italian Matteo Garrone or even Dead Leaves by the Finn Aki Kaurismaki. On Monday 11, the film received 4 nominations – including those for best dramatic actress for Sandra Hüller and best screenplay – at the next Golden Globes, the ceremony of which will be held on January 7 in Los Angeles.

Justine Triet’s fourth feature film, a trial film about a novelist suspected of having killed her partner, did not wait to make a name for itself. In Cannes, the speech delivered by the director during the awards ceremony, offensive towards the government’s policy (cultural, but not only), had already sparked controversy. Released on August 23, Anatomy of a Fall nevertheless won its first bet in theaters, at home, where it met with a very favorable reception, bringing together nearly 1.3 million spectators.

The choice of the CNC raised many strong questions

However, we immediately learned, at the end of September, that it would not represent France at the Oscars in the category of best foreign film, the commission brought together by the National Center for Cinema and Animated Images (CNC) for this purpose having preferred The Passion of Dodin Bouffant by Tran Anh Hung, a culinary fiction undoubtedly more in line with the idea we have of a French cultural showcase. A choice which gave rise to many lively questions in the profession.

However, even before the spectacular Berlin harvest, the team had just returned from a triumphant tour in the United States, where the film, released in 450 theaters, having attracted nearly 580,000 spectators, took the opportunity to win four trophies prestigious: 2 at the Gotham Awards (best screenplay, best international film), another awarded by the New York Film Critics Circle (best foreign language film), and an additional one by the National Board of Review (best international film) .
